The first meeting of the LAG Den Helder was on 12 of January 2006. The Local Action Group Den Helder has members actively involved in prevention of early school leaving on policy level, on school level, especially in the risk part of pre-vocational secondary education, the youth care organisation active in and out of secondary school and the catch net provisions of Triton for school drop outs and long unemployed youngsters.

We will organise, if we have done the mapping, the involvement of practice experts, youngsters who did leave school early and have experience with what this meant for their life, and there will be a discussion of the LAG with these youngsters of the Triton project, to discuss the actual provisions we have to prevent early school leaving and to help early school leavers. If necessary, we can use the results of this discussion to change the offer to potential school leavers.

Current work:
Manager of a Project Agency at a provision for youth care. The agency is involved in projects preventing early school leaving. The Projectbureau (Project Agency) is engaged in projects on upbringing, education and social competency, particularly for the 12-18 year-old age group.

The Projectbureau has activities in three areas:

  • Educational assistance

In cooperation with secondary education, the Projectbureau runs projects to prevent school drop-out. Students who temporarily need extra support in addition to school coaching are supervised in Plus Classes (Plusklassen). Educational social workers from Parlan coach students in improving their work attitude and behaviour through individual consultations and assignments and group training programmes in social skills and defence.

Students attend the Plus Class two or three times a week, usually at the end of the school day. An assistance plan is drawn up together with the student. The supervisor also maintains contact with the parents about the situation at school and at home. Student supervisors at the school are frequently consulted.

Students are supervised for an average of three to six months. A decision may be made to continue the supervision or other help may be recommended.

  • Training programmes and courses

The Projectbureau provides short-term training programmes and courses for various target groups. These are standard forms of help that can also be offered as modules within Kardeel's assistance.

  • Social skills training programme for youth 12-16 years of age

This training programme is particularly designed for youth who are wrestling with authority problems. The central theme in the training programme is learning to deal with all sorts of criticism and conflicts. The training programme consists of eight 1-1/2 hour sessions and can be provided at various locations.

  • Defence training programmes at schools

    - The Marietje Kessels Project (Marietje Kesselsproject) is an elementary education training programme in physical and mental defence for the prevention of abuse of power. The training programme consists of ten 1-hour lessons that are given during the regular school day. Girls and boys are given separate lessons. The training programme also includes a meeting with parents and the school team.

    - Rock and Water (Rots en Water) is a psychophysical training programme for youth on the road to adulthood. The training programme was initially designed to help boys learn to deal with power, strength and helplessness. The training programme has been expanded into an educational programme that works on self-control, self-reflection and self-confidence. The programme consists of twelve 1-hour lessons.

    - Enjoyment at School (Plezier op school) is a two-day training programme during the summer vacation for children who are leaving elementary school and need some extra encouragement in defence and self-confidence in the transition to secondary education.

  • Dealing with adolescents

This course is designed for parents and educators who would like to know more about adolescents and the problems they face. Using assignments and role-play, they practice a new attitude in groups of 8. Exchanging experiences is an important element in the course. The course is offered several times a year at various locations.
