Current Work:
My Job title is Equality Development Officer (gender). I work for Leeds Social Service Department in the Equality Development Unit.
My role is to assist the Department in achieving equal opportunities in terms of employment and service delivery from a gender perspective, implement and monitor the departments Action Plans both of these areas in line with on-going legislative and other changes in the provision of social and health care.
In SSD I work as the Equality Development Officer looking at gender issues, My role involves looking at developing and monitoring the department's equal opportunities targets for employment and training from the perspective of gender in relation to :
- recruitment and selection;
- conditions of services;
- training (including positive action training)
I advise operational staff on aspects of service delivery relating to gender ensuring that specific needs of different gender groups are taken into account. I have a lot of knowledge of different BME community groups in Leeds and communication with these groups on a regular basis. I have a lot of experience of working with overseas project while working with the SEEM project within SSD
(SEEM looked at services for BME elders in Leeds and other European cities).
Past Work:
I have worked for SSD for the last 13 years, My first job in SSD was as the Asian Counsellor at Leeds Crisis Centre were I provided one to one counselling to Asian women who had mental health problems. After that I became the Carers Development Officer again with SSD department providing support to BME carers by informing them of which services were available to them as carers.
Before working for SSD I was the Homeworking Support Workers with the Low Pay unit, providing support to Asian homeworkers.

I have got a BSc (Hons) in Theraputic Counselling and have completed Stage 1&2 of my Teacher Training.
Professional areas of interest:
I have a special interest in working with different BME communities that can be; the Young ; the Elderly; people with mental health problems; carers and in particular women who experienced domestic violence.
I have worked with the media in all my different roles hightligting the needs of the BME communities and I also provide training to orgainsations on the cultural issues, equality and diversity issues, carers and mental health issues.

Current work:
I am a development worker with responsibility for developing accredited learning opportunities through a credit and qualifications framework for member organisations (approx 100) from higher education, further education, public and voluntary and community sectors. I help develop partnerships and collaborative arrangements for learning providers (e.g. community and voluntary organisations) and offer them quality assurance support. I help develop national qualifications, partnership approaches and collaborative initiatives between our members. I provide some accredited training (e.g about quality, assessment of learning) and the OCN is active in the local, regional and national agendas for promoting social inclusion, wider participation in learning and community transformation.
Past work:
I have over 25 years work experience; I have managed a national consortia education project, a local adult learning centre (Swarthmore) and various community development projects and centres in London. I have helped set up projects (e.g. after school clubs) have held representative positions on Primary and Secondary School Boards of Governors and community projects and have campaigned on various local, regional and national issues. I have a wide ranging knowledge and interest in education and learning issues.
Professional areas of interest:
I am interested in the role of people in community transformation in urban, rural and multi-racial contexts (who have traditionally not accessed mainstream education) and the particular role of young and older men in this process. I have spent the last 10 years working with EU funded education and training programmes (mainly Socrates and Leonardo da Vinci). During the course of my career I have had the opportunity to participate in Leonardo da Vinci Trainer projects to Sweden and Italy. I have also visited many partner institutions all across Europe.
The British Council (UK National Agency) now regard me as an 'expert' in Leonardo da Vinci mobility projects. I am regularly asked to help them with changes in national documentation and reporting guidelines and also to deliver workshops at national conferences and seminars on their behalf.
I was asked, as an experienced project promoter, to contribute oral and written evidence to the EU Select Committee Inquiry at the House of Lords (UK government) into the new EU Integrated Lifelong Learning Programme for 2007-2013.
Subsequently, I had my name put forward to the European Commission by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) as an expert on the working group consultation process for the new EU Integrated Lifelong Learning Programme, which has involved research and meetings at the European Commission's directorate for education & training in Brussels along with representatives of other National Agencies from across Europe. The working group was asked to look at the bureaucracy of the present programme and how it can be improved for the next phase.
I am also a member of the UK New Programme Steering Group led by the DfES, which is looking at how the programme will be implemented in the UK.
