The town is an UNESCO World Heritage Site on account of its 19th century Romantic architecture and landscape. Municipality of Sintra has a total area of 317 km2 and a population of 445.872 inhabitants (2008).
At Sintra municipality most Roma live in social housing. At Mira Sintra district, besides social housing (D. Pedro IV quarter), they also live in hutted accommodation. They lead a lot of negative statistics: low family incomes, increasing family debt, high unemployment, low education, increasing school dropout percentage at earlier levels, increasing poverty, over occupation of houses.
Along with other partners, municipality developed a territorial integrated program for the whole quarter called social networks. This program aims to promote Mira Sintra social development: improving the professional skills of the inhabitants, improving of the overall image of the quarter (elimination over occupation of the houses and improvement public/urban spaces) and promoting Roma integration. ‘I am Roma’ will support this program by raising awareness and changing the negative perception of the Roma community.
